Case Study: How Custom Engineering Solved a Challenging Edgebanding Problem for Specialist Commercial Joinery

When Neil Carter of Specialist Commercial Joinery approached us, his team was facing a critical manufacturing bottleneck.  They needed to apply a highly specialised, exceptionally hard, and brittle edging material for a project.  Having exhausted all conventional application methods, Neil turned to our team to find a technical solution.

Technical Assessment & Showroom Testing

We invited Neil and his management team to our showroom to run live material tests on our machinery.  The initial trials highlighted significant finish challenges due to the brittle nature of the material.  By the end of the first day, standard configurations had not achieved the flawless finish required.

While it initially seemed like a dead end, our engineering team treats structural challenges as opportunities for innovation.  We refused to let the problem rest.

Partnering for a Tooling Solution

Our technical team analysed the test results and determined that while the machine's feed and pressure mechanics were sound, the standard cutting geometry needed alteration.

We partnered with our specialist tooling supplier to source alternative, high-performance cutters.  Initial adjustments yielded immediate improvements, but still fell short of our internal quality benchmarks.  Following further technical consultations, we engineered a refined tooling configuration designed specifically to prevent fracturing on brittle substrates.

Rigorous Validation and the Interwood MFB60C

We conducted extensive secondary testing with the new custom tooling setup.  The results were outstanding, delivering a perfectly clean, high-precision edge.

Upon reviewing the structural integrity and finish of the test pieces, Specialist Commercial Joinery placed an order for the Interwood MFB60C Edgebander.

Commissioning, Training, and Multi-Material ROI

Following delivery, our engineers managed the complete installation and commissioning of the Interwood MFB60C on-site.  To ensure maximum operational efficiency, we conducted comprehensive staff training, demonstrating the machine's diverse production capabilities.

The Interwood MFB60C successfully processed:

  • Thin edging on a coil
  • 3mm profiling on a coil
  • Laminate and veneer strips
  • Solid wood lippings up to 15mm

The Business Outcome

This project perfectly illustrates our approach to B2B partnership.  By engineering a custom solution for a difficult material, we didn't just sell a machine; we helped a client safeguard their product quality, reduce material waste, and significantly lower labour hours.
